Louie the Neapolitan Mastiff

Oct 12

At 5 o’clock this morning poor Louie vomited all his dinner. He has been on his anti nausea medication for the last 3 days. I guess it’s not helping this time. This was 3 days after his 2nd chemo treatment. 2 days after his first chemo he had 2 episodes of a very small amount of vomiting  but this time it was a lot. He vomited 3 more times today. He wants nothing to eat not even his boars head cold cuts which he ate after his last chemo when he lost his appetite. I managed to get his anti nausea pills in him but he vomited them up this morning. So far he is keeping the evening dose down. I gave them to him about an hour ago. My poor boy looks like he was hit by a truck and I am sure he feels like it too. I have massaged his back and neck and legs. I let him out to lay in the sun this afternoon and I have warmed up his comforter (that covers his dog bed) in the dryer so it’s nice and warm and comfy for him. I hate to see him feeling so yucky especially when he was better then ever right up to the day of his chemo treatment. I will be discussing things with his vet on Wednesday. I am seriously thinking of discontinuing his chemo and just letting him enjoy whatever time he has left. I will see how soon he bounces back from this or if there is any stronger anti nausea med we can give or maybe reduce his chemo dose so the side effects are not so severe. Anyway here’s hoping my boy bounces back in the next day or two! Hoping everyone else is feeling good!

    Hi there,
When you talk to your vet ask about inject-able anti-nausea meds at the time of chemo and also reducing the dose of chemo.
My pug Maggie had a different type of chemo for a different type of cancer, but when she got nausea the vet lowered the dose.
Stopping chemo is definitely an option if his nausea can not be managed. We often talk about quality here, that is what it really is all about.

Hope that nausea is behind you by now. Life just isn’t fun when food doesn’t taste good anymore. Hang in there!

I would second the notion of asking about injectable. When Ellie went in for a chemo session, she’d also get a dose of Cerenia and subcutaneous fluids at the same time. Then we would follow up at home w/ the 4 days of Cerenia pills. Ellie’s appetite did always dip after her chemo. We had such trouble w/ her appetite after her amputation though we did the Cerenia and fluids at each chemo just as a safety measure. I’m also sure the onc said that if she got serious side-effects like vomiting then they would try to reduce the dose so ask about that too. Absolutely the quality of life is the issue.

Ohhh I’m glad he’s feeling better. Here’s to a great day Louie & Sue!

P.S. There is also a drug called Odanestron that is supposed to be ROCKIN for easing the occurrence of nausea.

Keep us posted. And again, thank you so much for the Supporter Upgrade, you rock!
